It never ceases to amaze me that artists of this caliber often don’t receive the recognition they truly deserve.  Dylan (although great song writer himself) has got NOTHING on Townes Van Zandt. I can listen to Townes all day long and come away feeling somehow refreshed, the better for the experience and with a greater sense of my own humanity.  A great artist and poet is a rare bird and Townes was one of the rarest.  Thanks for the music Townes...you are greatly missed.

I had a small studio on 16th. ave. in Nashville and while taking a break a tour bus pulled into the back alley. it was my friend Steve Earle, he’d stop by and told me that he and Guy Clark and Townes were playing the Bluebird that night. He invited me to come see the show and said he’d save me a seat. Sure enough although the club was packed, Steve got me in free and saved me a seat on the front row. I mean my feet were touching the stage, sitting next to jonell Mosser. It was the only time I got to see Townes perform. What a magic night. Guy , Steve and Townes. True story.

This is an excerpt from and interview I did once…

Well, these are some very complex people, and life can sometimes seem very complex. I’ve learned I am what I am. We are multi-faceted. There is beauty in chaos. There are a lot of colors between the black & white of things. To just say Townes Van Zandt was just a drunk or Blaze Foley was homeless and crazy...you miss out on everything. You miss the point.
Whether or not you thought this person or that person was a mess or not, I believe they each fulfilled there destiny. These ripples effect us all daily.

After 13 years, I’m still trying to fill the hole with Guy and Steve’s stuff.  It doesn’t work.  Townes, you will forever be missed.

As great an American poet as has ever existed and as tortured and simultaneously gifted a human soul as I’ve ever witnessed! I’m a professional songwriter and I know whereof I speak....SO much profound waste!
