I hope Anton can survive his demons. His music is not for everyone, but some of the music I heard here was excellent. I was unfamiliar with these groups (BJM, DW) but I am going to search some of it out. The movie itself , while disturbing, was well made and held my interest throughout. I am curious to know what is going on with him today

This is a great documentary...every aspiring documentary filmmaker should be forced to watch this...the feel is new, the technique is fresh...this filmmaker made the documentary form very exciting…

Loved it. Goofus vs Gallant. Too bad the DWs appear so smug and condescending, however. Anton’s talent is highly overrated. The songs are OK, but no better than anything that someone with a Nuggets collection could regurgitate. Even worse, he’s a man child with a bad Cali vocal affectation.
The hero of the flick - Joel. Joel is cool. Best of luck to you, Joel.

Do you have biographies? I would love to watch biographies of the people who made the difference in the world business, politics, science, etc.

This film is such a powerful document of the life of a an artist who is committed or should be committed. Anton serves up so many quotable lines in the film. In addition to This is Spinal Tap this movie is required viewing for anyone in a band or anyone hoping to be in one.
Posted 04/04/09 by this is bullshit
this isn’t the whole movie. it’s just bits and pieces. you people suck. i’m so disappointed.

Total garbage.
I made it about 35 minutes into it.
What is with the being shocking
for the sake of being shocking?
This is not Rock n’ Roll
This is, we wish we were Nirvana or evn just Poison.
Art and Commerce?
No, ...just bland music that equals Commerce.

Oh, Kurt. Why did you have to leave us with these jokers??

Great unintentional comedy! Love the Jesus/Hitler/Manson scene. Also, “13 Tales from Urban Bohemia” is one of the worst album titles ever.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols were both just a bunch of retro poseurs. The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed already made this music. Doing it again thirty years later does NOT make it original. Doing drugs and acting like drunken idiots is not cool.

“REAL UNDERGROUND” has no clue. There are a lot of different “underground” scenes, and I don’t think either BJM or the Dandies ever thought of themselves in those terms. The bands he mentions are just of a different genre, mostly early punk and hardcore, whereas a band like BJM is much more influenced by 60s psychedelic rock, early Stones, etc. It’s not a competition, dude—I like a lot of the bands yous are talking about, but I also like BJM and the Dandies. I don’t have to choose or decide that one is “phony.” And maybe if you had come up in a better music scene than Podunk Wisconsin—like, say, San Francisco, where BJM got their start and the Dandies spent a lot of time—you would have a broader sense of musical taste and knowledge than your own little corner of the world.
Posted 07/30/08 by real underground sucks
Some of us enjoy these bands a lot more than we would those obnoxious hardcore bands you named. I personally do not want ‘real underground’ as you described it… I’d take these two bands any day over the screaming crap you named.
Posted 07/27/08 by REAL UNDERGROUND
These bands are really just phony underground.
I spent the mid-1980’s - late 1990’s in the REAL underground
on tours and in scenes that would eat these #s alive.
They are like a cheap REALLY cheap Dickies-Fluid copies -
these are the type of bands/scenesters that made me stop.
Portland should be POISON IDEA - not the #in capitol records type feelers. YOu want underground? see REAL bands
PI, Black Flag, Dicks, Necros, Suicidal (early), ALL Dischord
pre 1987 and all the bands that NEVR WANTED A DEAL prior to 1990 - THese guys are weak - ONE TOUR!! HA! EVERY BAND that was underground played my town in WI in the 80’s - 90’s and they didn’t # around if you wanted to fight they did. SEE the DWARVES - naked dudes get there asses kicked and liked it and we liked to deal it out!Hard-ons, descendents, SNUFF - JESUS they came from england! SAINT VITUS good god THEY WOULD HEROIN YOUR ### TO SLEEP! My point these #s are phony.

This is one of my favorite documentaries of all time. It’s got amazing music and insanely memorable characters. A funny, sad and tragic story of two great bands looking for success. Should be required watching for anyone with rock and roll drea,s
