This was an extremely interesting documentary. I was a little worried about its storyline and where it was going during the first half. But the second half brought to light many many things that I was not surprised to hear.
I pray that some light is shed on this man’s dark life and that he becomes open to that light.

That was one of the better documentaries I have seen in a while but it was a strange one for sure. I enjoyed watching Sharkey the real blood-sucking politician to be at first. I almost felt bad for thinking he was a freak because of his lifestyle because he seemed like a nice guy. Then the movie takes a left turn into strangeville and I found myself disliking him, and the end made me just feel sorry for him and so many people like him.
The interview with director W. Tray White posted on here was a fun read but it also answered some questions I had and probably most will have after watching the whole thing. Not as good as a director’s commentary track but a great feature. Now to find a mindless, happy documentary to get me out of the strange mood this put me in.

You guys really want to know what is sad that they did not show in this film everything that my children or I said. How he abused physically and mentally his own children. And how I found him stepping on his son’s head when the boy was 7. Or how he told his daughter that if she told me that he was abusing them he would throw her out a window from a 3rd story and actually dangled her out that window by 1 leg. I left him the day after I found out he was abusing my children. He is the worst father, I have ever had the misfortune to come across. I married a christian man. Who was actually a Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. I will never forgive him for the damage he did to his kids and to me. The man is a crazy lunatic who needs to be locked up and have the keys thrown away. This film makes me sick. It makes him out to almost be the victim and not a man who should never go near kids or women. He destroys every life he touches and it doesn’t bother him at all.As long as he is the center of attraction, And he has the nerve to say he would impale child abuser, rapist, and child molester. and every other criminal around when he is the biggest criminal of all.On top of being a dead beat father.I do not expect nor want anyone to feel sorry for me or think that, That is what I am looking for, because it is not. However I do want to say that John is a con artist of the first degree. He can make you think he is the best thing to happen to you since apple pie, and once you let him in, all hell brakes loose.Mr. Tray White should have shown every inch of the original taping of this film. Maybe I’ll write a book like everyone says,I should. And tell the whole truth and not just tiny pieces of it. And Jonathon , John, Kat, Kathlyn, Rocky or John what ever he calls himself today. He says he holds no animosity. Yeah right,I still have letters where he is threatening to come to Florida and kill us all for what was said in the film and he doesn’t even know half of what was said. I wish he did. The ones,I do feel sorry for are his children from the first Matthew to the last my son John. It is sad that this is the legacy this man is leaving his children a bunch of lies and a last name to be ashamed off because of him. To the point our daughter had a baby boy and actually gave the baby my father’s full name to include my maiden name. That’s whats truly sad. That his children are ashamed of him. Today he sits in a prison cell in Indiana again because he doesn’t know when to STOP.

When goths take themselves to seriously… I’m kidding of course but that was what was going through my head during the first part of the documentary. As others have stated it seems to me that Mr. Sharkey is mentally ill. I don’t know how much control he has over recognizing humanities agreed too reality (or at least the western culture of), but I feel much sadness for his children and past lovers. I’m very curious to know what his childhood was like in more detail than the film provided. From what I know his views on Pagan beliefs are totally askew from the larger Pagan community. I can’t comment on his Satanic views as I know little of that community. To me this was a tragic story of someone who has really lost touch with humanity.
Posted 09/09/09 by Derrick
This is a story of a very sad, sick, and immature man. He had an unrealistic dream of being a governor and even the president. It brings a tear to my eye when children are abused, but it brings me to a sob when those children can’t overcome their mental obstacles. I disagree with christianity, but I see satanism and paganism as even more foolish wastes of mental and physical energy. I have to watch something funny now to get this out of my head.
Posted 09/07/09 by Too much reality
The mind of Jonathan Sharkey is simple and crazy from a distance, and that is what makes this such a facinating documentary. It starts out showing us the “Impaler” that we expect to see; The ranting, biting, and somewhat entertaining want to be politician. Slowly we get to see the hidden side of this man, the sad and lonley side of a man who has experienced terrible things in life and that has turned him into the man he is.
Posted 08/19/09 by this is reality
This documentary is living one mans fantasy. There is no real world for these people, almost like his reality is his own dream? I don’t have words to describe how truly important it is to be humane and neuter the very much sick. Not because his platform was out of whack, but because he really is sick. And when you watch the part with his kids, you can see how he spotlights and infests them with his inability to tell even a simple truth. This is very sad, but almost enraging to me.
Posted 08/09/09 by Mateo
Of course its glamorization of the mentally ill, but I’m OK with that. Jonathon was obviously abused horibly as a child and this is the way he turned out. I see it as a lesson for parents out there, if you physically (and/or sexually) abuse your kid then you too can have and adult who bites himself and allows others to “drink” from the wound.
There were parts of the film that were touching and amusing in a gentle way, but most of it was depressing and sad. I don’t feel sorry for Jonathon and I don’t feel bad for the women who get involved with him. Mostly I was sad knowing that Jonathon will continue hopping from witch to witch spreading his damaged genetic code and making more unfortunate children who will be raised in broken homes. This film is an excellent example of why kooks should be sterilized.
Posted 08/07/09 by Water Damaged
I could not disagree more with the last comment when Peter stated this was an “unfortunate glamorization of the mentally ill” for two reasons. The first is that this is stylistically anti-glamor. I just read the interview posted on this very page where W. Tray White states “Early on, I committed to an artistic vision that I thought would best portray Jonathon’s story in the most honest way possibly. My vision was filming in a raw, minimal and stripped down style while in Minnesota, just waiting until I spotted a real progression in Jonathan’s story to slowly switch the quality (notice the switch to 24fps when I arrive in New York) and style into becoming more fluid, always slightly improving with the rate of story progression.”
I also disagree because it is like blaming the messenger or the journalist, or in this case, a documentarian on how the story turned out. That man is disturbed and his story was sad. I think the presentation was handled perfectly (with a few minor exceptions) for the story told.
Posted 08/06/09 by peter
i agree with the other comment above - unfortunate glamorization of the mentally ill - it is kind of like watching a sad audition for American Idol in which you know the person singing is mentally ill and actually believes they have talent (and their supportive parent is cheering them on because it will keep them distracted until they get back home and put on a helmet). very sad documentary.
and besides - a phd? what the hell is that about?

I enjoyed this documentary even if I didn’t like the main subject, Jonathan Sharkey A.K.A. The Impaler I enjoyed how the director set it up (and not to give too much away) but there is more to Mr. Sharkey than someone who likes to play make believe and thinks he can become a governor. There is a definite darkness to the man but not in the inhuman, vampiric or satanic way that he wants us to believe but something that is very much apart of the human condition. There is an undercurrent of pain, abuse, and extreme self-loathing in all that John Sharkey does. He appears to exhibit Pseudologia Fantastica to mask his feelings of impotence, fear, and uncertainty. This is a complex man and was treated as such. I do recommend it.

this is a sad harrowing and humorus tale of an abusive patheticlly imangiative narcist who is attaining the level of infamy and noteriety that he so does not deserve… along with his ill informed statements of religions he obviously knows little to nothing about (and i say this as an atheist)
as he clings to anything that would allow him to be viewed outside of the norm for little more than the attention that it will bring him… so even as i write this i too am fully aware that by watching the film that i have also done my unfortunate part to perpetuate the mythos of a “man” that deserves to be forgoten…

Portrait of Mentally Ill, American Trash....oh and he’s a “vampire”....running for governer.
This is perhaps the 15th title I have viewed on this site, and definitely one of the least interesting. I don’t believe it to be terrible writing or editing, in fact I think of it sort of as a “good film with uninteresting content”...if that makes sense to you. It seems like we see these people everyday...strange people with strange ideals, questionable motives, and a desperate desire for attention. And while I may be interested in watching a three or four minute interview or listen to a soundbyte, I see it somewhat unneccessary to give a “man” like this such a forum to tell us why HE is interesting enough to have a documentary film about him.. I stayed with it until the end because I had absolutely nothing else better to do, so I was hoping there would be something “sensational” but there really wasn’t anything close. His arrest was sort of interesting, but it wasn’t unlike any other arrest we see on the tele.
And to let the guy get a five minute “never give-up” speech at the end? Seriously? Who is going to take “advice” from this guy? Oh and the song they play at the end sounds, so appropriately, like the song that plays during the tranny scene in Silence of the Lambs.
Overall, the movie isn’t “terrible”, and I somewhat believe that the quality of the film makes up for the uninteresting content.
I wouldn’t recommend this movie

Thank you, Ericka. After 15 minutes I stopped the film, because he seems very flaky. But after reading your hysterical little comment, I decided to watch the rest of the film, and see the full picture the filmmaker painted. Just because someone is eccentric, or perhaps has a different worldview, is no reason to insist he must be committed, or that his ideas must be prevented from reaching children. I have a feeling the state run by him would be closer to the founding fathers ideas of freedom than one controlled by you. Thank you again.

This started out as one funny and crazy comedy. Then the humor gets replaced by deep sadness. Great way to set up the audience and keep us on our toes.
I admit I might have been a little more lost if not for reading the director’s question and answer in that he basically wants us to figure out how we feel. That is quite strange in todays world of manipulation and everyone shoving their own beliefs down out throat.
And this is the first time I’ve heard of Snagfilms. I look forward to exploring more but I think a general forum for viewers would be nice.

Adding to a thought from ‘G. Bunting’ and ‘Fauntleroy’ below me. Jonathan The Impaler is some piece of work for sure. But imagine if the average politician, Dem or Repub, were followed around by a sneaky bastard (spoken with fondness) like that director, counterfeit innocence being his method, a laid back charm being his shield, and an uncanny ability to manipulate and snag (pun intended) the information he seeks.
I watched this in December and when I came to Snag today I felt an urge to watch it again. G. Bunting I agree 100% about the cable news approach and would bet a shiny nickle that the director W. Tray never took an RTV course in his life! I was a broadcasting major and he broke ever rule in the book, now methinks the book might need to be rewritten in some key parts. With the world in this terrifying state we just might need to look to the unknown bloggers, renegade documentations, and dedicated v-loggers to help us put it back together.
Speaking as an America, I would bet another shiny nickle that if we were somehow able to appoint a blogger, filmmaker, and v-logger to every Federal politician we would be shocked by how much they have in common with The Impaler.

I stopped watching because it’s rare to find a counter culture gem and I do not want to ruin my experience by the the site flaws and limitations. These commercials are terribly placed and not being able to watch full screen in high quality are bad choices for this site. I will wait until someone posts a torrent.

Most interesting aspects of this film involve the media’s conplicity in the publicity campaign of a possibly deranged fabulist. In the maw of the media there is an equivalency of this guy and Ralph Nader. No wonder our culture is haunted by speakers for the dead, psychics, ghosts, saints, vampires, angels and other such fantastical garbage.
Let’s just hope we continue to have people like this director willing to expose the system and men like Sharkey in this gente and maticilous way. No name calling, fist pounding, yelling or other such immature antics were needed to expose, then frighten the public. I can’t say the same for cable news.
Posted 02/27/09 by Kendra
Fist, I feel this was a well crafted, and entertaining documentary. Some scenes are very, very strange. It is clear that the directors budget was zilch and EVERYONE he interviewed or filmed were very “off” to put it nicely, and his style is unique to the point of it almost being off putting if that makes sense? With all that said, the movie still really works.
The movie would get slow in parts and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it until his wife starts talking about her love, irrational as we might find it, for a school bus. If just keeps getting better from there.

Very good movie, but I wish they would have made the editing a little tighter. Better yet, I wish Snag Films offered an option to watch DVD extras. I would sit through some commercials to listen to the directors commentary because I would love to understand how some of the creative choices were made.

I remember Jonathan the impaler Sharkey way back when. He made fun of me over MySpace because I told him he’d never be elected to anything, then he made an Elvis music album, then he disappered. Well he sure is big news again back in Minnesota.
I went to Blockbuster last week and searched high for this with no luck. I finally found it on here and besides the annoying commercials this movie is proof that most Americans should be on lots of prescribed medicine. Besides the FBI guy and of course the cocky kid director w tray white, according to the poster below me “AIRKA* the great (rolls eyes), everyone in the movie were a bunch of freaks.
The movie was a lot better then I thought it would be. The only annoying thing is watching it on a small computer screen, annoying commercials and I am pissed I can’t find it in stores because I want to hear the commentary.
Posted 02/11/09 by Tom
Well I guess I can see where you are coming from to a small degree. Some parts did make me smile, others made me chuckle, but most of the time I was saddened by the state of this poor man’s health.
Posted 02/09/09 by is this where my name goes?
ROTFL! I can’t lie, this probably isn’t for everyone but if you have a biting sense of irony and a perverse sense of humor it’s worth giving a shot. It’s a little slow in parts but it is a documentary after all. I LOLed probably 20 times just watching that guy talk.
And to that snarkey poster right below me, the “cocky director W tray White” deserves a metal for being able to put up with people like you and keep a straight face. Take a breather, life isn’t that serious. Jeeeesh!

Being one who holds my spiritual side sacred I wasn’t sure how I felt, or how I wanted to feel about this movie during the viewing and even when it ended. It frightens me to imagine bigots in middle America looking at Jonathon The Impaler as representing, what most would call “alternative Religion” (but step back and look at the origins of your Christian holidays, you might be surprised) and how it is practiced. Jonathon Sharkey has never represented anyone but himself and his inflated ego.
I also wrote the director a total of four times over the course of two years about my reasonable concerns on how he planed to portray Wiccan, Vampires and otherkin only to receive a sarcastic, immature and arrogant reply back from W. Tray White, each one more sarcastic than the next.
With those statements out of the way, and a little time to absorb the film, I found Impaler to be a fair documentary, showing little or no bias. I also found that the “cocky kid” side of the director absent from the screen as he gently and seemingly reluctantly ends up guiding us, the viewer, for at least a 1/3 of the film by his in-control, yet delightful, sometimes charming demeanor.(if only he was that way in real life he might have something going for him)
The story itself was intriguing as I found myself bounced from one aspect of the story to the next. I would not necessarily call them twists parse, but unexpected changes in direction. Impaler was a surprising eye opener into Mr. Sharkey’s psyche a well as the people who he so dearly affected. I freely admit that I always found Jonathon Sharkey to be a stain on my culture when I heard about him during 2006, considering he has been the most notable figure in recent history to publicly claim belief in the Wiccan Rede yet lives his life very far off the path. And I clearly have no qualms expressing my disappointment in the cockiness and mocking tone displayed by the director W. Tray White via our correspondence.
In stating the above, I do have the ability to separate the on screen and off screen and I can objectively say that Impaler was an exercise and much needed reminder not to judge something before fully experiencing it. Viewing Impaler I was taken with an uneasy, ever so slight, feeling of compassion for the man at times, while despising him even more during others. This is a movie I imagine most adults and mature teenagers being able to appreciate.

I knew I wasn’t crazy! I watched End of America a few days ago, and just watched Impaler on here. I knew a voice and style sounded familiar with both and sure enough, I look up IMDB and the director of Impaler, W. Tray White, also worked on The End of America.
I knew about 10 minutes into Impaler that was the same guy that starts out interviewing people ("What do you love about America") in End of America along with the almost exaggerated documentary style camera work.
I’m just tickled that I was able to spot it and thought I would share!

Calm down Anna Bella. Are you saying that other viewers don’t have the right to decide what is funny? I see your point to a degree but I also found it to be, at times, comical with no lntentions of being hurtful. As each of our lives are different so is our personal taste and perspectives. Is that not what makes art so entertaining?
I hope your family life has gotten better but please don’t take out your personal problems in this small community. That’s what Youtube is for.

Good film, no doubt about it. That said, Yes let’s all laugh at the mentally handicapped *rolls eyes*
What is wrong with some of the people leaving comments? This is not a comedy. This man has a very real mental illness and has been to hell and back and you laugh about it? I have experience in my own family with abuse and mental illness and funny is the last word I would use to describe the torment my family went through.

Whoa! Did not see that coming. Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey is so pathetic but at the same time he is so brave hahaha. I really wanted him to do great at first, then I started hating him, then I felt pity for him, then I just got confused by the roller coaster of emotion, then the end? I agree with documania74, I wanted more! Great, I suppose you would call it a dark comedy documentary.

I finally get why people kept telling me I had to see this. I was expecting another political documentary (yawn) but this is far from it, thankfully. The election is over and I just can’t handle nasty politics for a while, especially after 8 years of Bush, not to mention the world going to hell.
This was a much needed break from the real world that had my attention the whole time. I hate to even compare it to this but it is almost like a reality show but with a soul, a real soul, not a contrived, over produced network/cable reality show. It does have some shock factor scenes but they never seem forced. I don’t think I would recommend this to the stupid majority that like the -Bay and Bruckheimer- kind of movies, but for anyone who enjoys even a tiny bit or originality I give it a thumbs up.

Absolutely worthy of the high praise and good reviews, hands down the most unique doc on snag that I have seen so far. I cracked up during the part where the director was helping Jonathon made his “impaling pole” because it made me feel like he was letting me in on the joke. But WTF was up with the toilet scene? Did they pick that spot on purpose or was it an accident? And the wife calling 911? What a lunatic of a lady. I got the feeling that those two guys just grabbed a couple of cameras and had a fun time then some how ended up making an awesome documentary.
While this IS the most unique doc. I’ve seen on here I haven’t seen them all, not even close to the 510 listed, but I have seen a lot. Just because it’s unique doesn’t make it the “best” necessary, but as of right now it is in my top 3 and I highly recommend it.

This guy is a riot, but he probably would have gone from “idiot awesome” to “it’s getting old now” if the director would have given us the expected treatment on the vampire, Satan loving Jonathon “The Impaler.” Thank God (or Satan) that he structured it the way he did because the end made me want more, more, more!
I just checked the IMDB page after watching and there is hardly any activity. How do people not know about this? The director or distribution company or who ever is in charge of marketing really dropped the ball.

This was so over the top and funny at times then so sad other times. For me this movie brings up many issues that need to be addressed like the media in America and mental health issues. Jonathon Sharkey needs serious medical attention. I know from reading the comments that some feel this man is a joke but I can tell you first hand that a condition like the one he has destroys families.

I disagree xhitz, I think the first 20 minutes starts out with a bang! Then in the 3rd act is slows down a little but I understand why they had to do it that way. I didn’t mind the shaky camera work at the start of the film either. to each his own I guess.
All in all this was the most interesting documentary I’ve seen on here. I am just tired of all the serious political stuff by now and this was just fantastic.

What a #### good movie. The absurdity was almost lost on me until the director was helping Jonathan make his “Impaling” stick, then I understood what the director was really trying to accomplish (of at least that’s how I saw it). A true LOL moment never the less.
Highly reccommended, just make it past the first 20 minutes (strange opening, odd choice in camera and audio work, then it is fine) and you’ll be hooked.

Generally speaking, I tend to believe that people have the rights to their beliefs so long as they’re not doing harm to others. I think these folks are kooks, but they don’t seem to be harming anyone.
One note, you don’t dial 911 because your family is harassing you on the phone. That’s taking resources away from real emergencies. There are many many litmus tests out there that I use to decide if someone is an idiot. Calling 911 for non-emergencies ranks way up there.

This movie really caught me off guard. It was a beautiful, strange, ugly and moving all rolled into one seamless bundle. The camera work and the audio struggle sometimes but the story is so captivating that I couldn’t stop watching it. I agree with you Marvin, this is by far one of the best profile documentaries I’ve seen in quite some time.

Hudson, you didn’t see anything on youtube, but thanks for playing. Also, let me decide if it sucks to be a Pats fan. Thanks, kid.

To think that the media took this guy seriously and that he might have had a chance to win is terrifying. The shakey camera work almost made me give up watching after the first commercial but I had to see where it was going. Glad I kept watching. Exellent documentary! Very unique style in the camera work, the editing, the pacing. I would never have picked up this documentary if I saw it in Blockbuster simply because of the DVD cover. Well you know what they say about books and covers. Long live Snag Films!

I feel dirty after watching this and even dirtier because it sucked me in. Very good documentary with a hell of a strange ending. One of the better profile documentaries I’ve seen in a while.

Brady12, I’ve seen some of the extra footage for the DVD before they took it off of Youtube. Some of it is boring and pointless but some of it is batshiznit crazy!
Why they didn’t use it in the movie is beyond me. I assume they explain it in the director’s commentary though, or so I hope. I’ll find out soon enough, have it waiting on netflix right now.
And if your “Brady12” referes to Tom Brady sucks to be a Pats fan right now! haha

This movie is surreal. I can’t wait for the DVD with the extra footage and commentary.
