Following the death of the world’s greatest golfer Saturday, I have realized that there is no way for me to grasp the absurdity of the state of affairs in North Korea. Kim Jong Il (who shot a miraculous 38 under par his first time on a golf course) has his entire country of 25 million in a profound state of sadness. The videos surfacing in media outlets show thousands of very similarly dressed North Koreans experiencing a wrenching existential crisis. Their godly leader, who through his grace has given them all that is good, has proven to be mortal. It is as if (in a very Nietzschean sense) God is dead, and the masses are stripped of direction and cosmic significance. It is no secret that there is often a striking discord between how we speak about environmental issues and how we actually live our lives. As we extol the benefits of “green energy” such as wind power, solar power, or geothermal energy, we will inevitably hop back into our fossil fueled cars for our routine morning commutes. Should we feel guilty for this hypocrisy, or is this just a product of the way things are? In normative terms, should we insist upon personal changes to better the quality of our energy sources and the condition of our planet, or are we simply trapped within a vast oil-based system that by its very nature deems individual efforts to be futile? With regard to the latter question, hypocrisy seems to be just swallowed and ignored because we presume that as individuals we can do nothing to change the status quo. With regard to the former, individual efforts are seen as important for progress. Subsequently, a sense of personal guilt, obligation, drive, etc. sets in, and we might then act in accordance with how we so admiringly speak of green endeavors. ...

Thirty-one years ago today, just before the Miami Dolphins blocked a game-winning field goal attempt by John Smith of the Patriots, Howard Cosell told America on Monday Night Football the paralyzing news that John Lennon was murdered outside of his Westside apartment. Those who experienced this news in real-time may not be able to fully describe their experience, and for many of us, we can only imagine what it must have been like to hear Cosell put that seemingly tense field goal in perspective.

SnagFilms Blog Making Internet History Once Again

SnagFilms bloggers Liz Cook and Richard Burst-Lazarus will be making internet history once again (we're pretty sure, we haven't really researched it) as we attempt to blog about more than fifty films in a single afternoon.

SnagFilms legal guru Carey generated a list of an extraordinary 52 films that may or may not have some relevance to Hispanic Heritage Month, which ends, oddly, in the middle of this month, on October 15.

Never ones to shy from a challenge, Liz and Richard made an incredible commitment: to blog about not merely some but all of the titles on Carey's list, regardless of how relevant they may actually be to Hispanic Heritage Month OR their quality, and to do it all in a single afternoon (probably after lunch since that's when Richard usually shows up at the office anyway), or at least to keep going until we get tired or bored.

I don't think it's building things up too much to say that both of us have had enormous reservations about this idea and in fact considered cancelling the Blog Challenge several times, maybe even taking Columbus Day off, as most Manhattan-area office workers are doing, and besides the weather just got nice again this weekend and it would be a shame to waste it. That, and it seems like Liz is taking longer at lunch than she usually does.

But, still, we soldier on. Preperation has included:

1) Deciding the rules: Liz will take the odd-numered movies on the list, Richard will take the even-numbered movie on the list. We will have five minutes to watch the movie and five minutes to write. Carey, as the only other person in the room with us, will be in charge of the iPhone timer that will decide our fate, although we haven't told her yet.

Length of the entry, usefulness to the reader, relevance of the writing to the film, quality of the prose, relative quality of our writing to the other person's writing, even spelling and grammar - none of these things are important. The important thing is to go the distance, to cover the story, to not fold in the face of adversity. That, and to wrap things by about 4:30 since I promised my friend I'd meet him somewhere.

2) Lunch, as previously discussed

3) Not telling anyone else in the office or anyone online that we're doing this.

After days of intense speculation surrounding the “Let’s talk iPhone” event, the new iPhone 4s was unveiled just moments ago at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA. Tim Cook took the stage, and with a touch of humor, stated, “This is my first product launch since being named CEO. I'm sure you didn't know that.”

Gods of the guessing game, the Apple team has allowed the suspense to build for months. The new device has been rumored to include Apple's latestiOS 5 mobile software, an improved rear camera, a larger screen, a better battery, a voice-activated “assistant” and the iCloud content storage service, a feature that Steve Jobs unveiled in June.

Although the new iPhone falls just short of blasting its users into outer space, it has no doubt captured the imagination of Mac lovers, and made a giant leap from the ancient days of the off-white miniature refrigerator-like clunkers with the on button beep that scared most people out of their chairs. Innovators of technology and masters of marketing, Apple has stuck to Steve Job’s philosophy—one that values a passion for the product itself and a belief that no matter how well it’s been done it, there’s a way to make it better.

My college graduation, my first kiss, the first and third time I ever owned a motorized vehicle (the second was my step-mothers' old car), the theoretical births of my theoretical children - no thrill in my life will ever match the sheer gut-wrenching excitement of realizing that, with our site relaunch, we have finally put Quigley online.

Quigley, a 2003 film I watched by accident due to a logistical mix-up in the office this summer, stars Gary Busey as a dog. Watching Quigley is like watching a car crash in slow motion, except instead of a car it's a career.

Busey starts as an evil executive who hates dogs. He's in a fatal car accident, and is taken to possibly the most low-budget heaven in Western cinema. There, he's told by angels (each of them a little too tall for the set) that his life is completely without merit, but he might have another shot at it if he rights the wrongs he's committed on Earth while in the form of a pomeranian.

Clearly, Quigley's a movie that sells itself, but I think a look at the trailer is going to give you a better idea of the quality of filmmaking we're discussing.

I welcome a wide discussion of Quigley's merits in the comments section, but let me suggest part of the appeal is that there's a genuine sentiment behind it. Found Footage Festival calls it "vaguely Christian," which isn't wrong. I'd say the people writing it were on a mission to create wholesome family entertainment.

But, clearly, the appeal is Busey. See, Busey still has his "acting chops." He's still got that leading-man charisma. It's just that now he's doing it as a dog.

In addition to a significant upgrade of its SnagFilms.com website, the company announced it would soon expand its distribution of the SnagFilms app from iOS to Android and BlackBerry® OS platforms, enabling viewers to watch its films on substantially all smartphones and tablet devices via applications that leverage the Adobe® AIR® runtime; expand its pay-on-demand titles from its current distribution partnerships with MVPD giants Comcast and FiOS to DIRECTV; expand the services and technologies enabling it to connect to viewers via television set-top boxes from Roku and Boxee to Xbox LIVE for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft; expand the pay-services by which its content can be purchased or rented from iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube Premium to Vudu and Samsung Media Hub; and announced partnerships that would enable SnagFilms to be accessible on major connected TV sets built by Sony, Samsung and Vizio.

We at SnagFilms have Best-Food-Film survey up right now, and it's just before dinner, so I'm launching a write-in campaign for Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is a world-renowned Japanese animation director - you may know him from his movies Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro - but he's also one of the most appetizingly food-passionate directors whose films you'll ever watch. Miyazaki makes everything look delicious, like the magic buffet in Spirited Away where Chihiro's parents gorge themselves and turn in to pigs. But you if you delve a little deeper and you start seeing Miyazaki's food obsession in everything. A little Search Fu turned up this video from the Spirited Away bonus features.
Another segment in those bonus features shows Miyazaki telling an underling that the dragon in Spirited Away should move sort of like a dog and sort of like an eel. Tellingly, he insists that this young animator eat at a traditional Japanese eel restaurant that night, to make sure he gets it right. Need more proof that Miyazaki gets hungry when he draws?
