The garment industry in northeastern, PA prevented economic collapse for the region after the decline of Anthracite coal mining in the 1930's. Througout the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys factories sprung up providing work for desparate people. The majority of workers in these factories were women who supported their families while sewing clothes for a nation. A Shop on Every Corner: Memories of the Garment Industry draws on the voices of workers, factory owners, union representatives and scholars whose honest and vivid commentary narrate the moving story of the rise, decline and legacy of an industry largely overseas today. While rooted in local history, the documentary tells the national story of the emergence of the United States as an industrial power to the county's struggle with de-industrialization.
History is a lens through which to examine the root causes of our successes and failures, on a personal level, as a community and as a nation. Learn More »
