I have nothing but respect for the challenging and sometimes unrewarding work our Ambassadors/diplomats are doing on our behalf. I lived on the Embassy compound in Islamabad, Pakistan during the October 1999 military coup and November 1999 terrorist rocket attack on the Embassy. That was under Ambassador Milam. In a short 18 months, I learned a lifetime of lessons...religion, terrorism, ignorance, poverty, literacy, diplomacy. I came to deeply respect and love a great many Pakistani’s..if it were still an accompanied tour, I’d go back without hesitation. A dear friend and her daughter were killed in a church bombing after we moved to neighboring India by men who believed that they were carrying out the Will of God/Allah. A tragedy on so many levels. If I were to offer a single suggestion that would make a difference, it would be education. Children in Maddrassa’s can’t read the Holy Quran, so they can only trust that what they’re being taught is in line with God’s/Allah’s actual word and the intention of the verses. Being given food, clothing, a roof, affection and medical care promotes that trust. That’s where the next terrorism begins in Pakistan...with innocent hungry/homeless children desperate for rescue. I trust our Ambassador knows this all too well and doesn’t require advise from a military wife, so it’s to other Americans that I write this. We must find out how we can help the diplomatic mission and help these children before Taliban/AlQeada-like organizations corrupt them into believing that God is war istead of love. |
