Set in writer and director Djamshed Usmonov's native village of Asht, Tajikistan, ANGEL ON THE RIGHT (FARISHTY KITFI ROST) is a colorful fable about an man who returns to his hometown after serving ten years in a Moscow jail. Hamro, the unrepentant prodigal son, is summoned home to help his mother die with dignity, but he gets more than he bargained for in the quiet village. His debts are many and long overdue, the townspeople are tough as nails, and he discovers he has a nine-year-son. The title is drawn from the Muslim notion that we are born with an angel on each shoulder: the angel on the right records the good that we do throughout our lives, and the angel on the left, the bad. In this dark comedy, his third feature film, Usmonov casts his hometown's real-life population to play itself; his own mother and brother play the fractured yet formidable domestic couple. ANGEL ON THE RIGHT (FARISHTY KITFI ROST) is presented in Tajik with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
