  Martin Luther King was one of the greats of my lifetime, and he helped me personally even though we never met. I had a learning disability growing up, and we were put in special segregated classes in school and weren't treated much better than his people, with the taunts and insults and bigottry. With the civil rights laws that he helped to get enacted came the sweeping "enlargement of the rights of all" he often spoke of, and this included improving the rights of women, and the disabled. So if anyone comes to me and tries to tell me that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did nothing for humanity but still up trouble, I will argue my point most fervently. He cared for much more than his own Black race. He cared for ALL human beings, "ALL of God's children". That man will go down in history, even centuries from now, as a great human being.   Deeply moving, I had my children watch it. I was blown away. I had not seen the complete clip since he appeared on the Mike Douglas show. My children and their friends have only seen news clips of this great man. Thanks to you, they had a chance to experience his poise, wit, intellect, serenity and patience as he helped everyone understand his moral commitment to militant nonviolence. I have not heard a proper explanation of his believe since. I was proud to have supported this great man, as he lived among us, and his dream to this very day. May the man of peace continue to rest in peace.

  People need to remember that it was student organizations, unions and ordinary people that started the movement for civil rights. Dr.King lent his voice and action to the work that ordinary everyday people fought long and hard for without pay, without the proverbial pat on the back and without the notoriety. It seems we like to deify certain individuals which in my view only lessens if not totally ignores the nameless and historically forgotten people that set in motion the platform for great people such as MLK to rise to prominence. When history is painted in this picture it doesn't tell the entire truth of how social change really occurs. When normal everyday people get tired of being sick and tired and turn their frustration into the physical action of organizing others into acts of social disobedience, then and only then is when the change will begin to take place. Social change rarely if ever comes from casting a ballot which is what our media likes to preach.

  The words and practices of Dr. King need to be amplified today. Let's not fill our world with wars, let's not fill our world with discrimination, let's fill our world with communication and understanding. We must realize every negative thought and action harms not only others, but does more harm to oneself!

  Dr. Martin Luther King was a remarkable man. I have nothing but admiration for him. He truly committed his life to transform a nation with a bent towards racism, violence, injustice and inequality. He led the nation to conduct "an attitude check" and look at itself in the mirror His book "Strength to Love" describes how The Beatitudes in Matthew's Gospel - Chapter 5 -- enabled him to lead the civil rights movement and his people out of segregation through boycotts; stand against the war in Vietnam, supported the plight of the sanitation workers and showed love for those who used violence to subdue the movement. Gone but never forgotten

  I read posts on the rather tea tinted CBS Marketwatch today where posters claimed MLK would support the wars the US has recently engaged in and that he would not support Obama because he is too left wing. This documentary is an excellent reminder of the principles and character that drove him. I must say I found the interview with Mike Douglas so intelligent and dignified while incisive that the contrast with the invective and incivility of discourse found on CNN or any of its peers today is disturbing. We can disagree and confront in intelligent ways and effectively share our views. MLK helped engender that.

  what a great a wonderful man. Too bad he is gone. I have read on several sites that his real, given name, was Michael, or "Mike". Can someone please tell me if this is fact and if so, why did he change it? Micael is a very historic and classical name. "Michael King" Thank you.

  Thank you. What a wonderful film. Living through this era taught us many great things. I appreciate the leaders who keep their eye on the gifts we have in this country and the hope that we set an example of peace and justice that removes the word diversity from our discussions and we talk more about the strengths and possibilites that weave us to become a most holistic nation.

  Yes. I think Dr. King did see "a time of war" during the civil rights movement. There were citizens of the United States who were at war with other citizens who they felt were inferior. Mary
