Assane Kouyat
Modibo TraorDjnba Kone
Magic spells lend a helping hand in Assane Kouyaté's debut feature, about a young man's troubled relationship with his native village in Mali, Africa. Having been banished due to ancient prejudices, Hamalla returns to the village four years later at a precarious time for their future. Now versed in modern technology, Hamalla must convince the village of the need to purify the water from the contaminated "holy well of the ancestors" as they face an epidemic. A poetic vision that cleverly and beautifully bridges two universal themes?the power of traditional ways and the necessity of accepting technology?KABALA is presented in Bambara with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
