Men Like My Father, Families Like My Own Synopsis

In Men Like My Father, Families Like My Own, filmmaker DJ Johnson explores the experience of widowed men who are struggling to come to terms with life after the death of their beloved wives. These men are forced to cope with devastating loss, while raising their young children as newly single parents. Johnson documents the journey of these men and their families, illuminating the various ways in which men grieve, and how they fight to heal, grow and love in the face of profound sadness. Interwoven with the stories of these men and their families is Johnson's story.

Fourteen years after his own mother died of breast cancer, Johnson journeys to Florida to speak to his father for the first time about the death of his mother, and to learn what life was like for his father as a widower with children. In doing so, Johnson uncovers the depth of his father's pain, but more importantly, reveals the magnitude of his father's strength and undying love for his family.
