The "Space Age" began April 12th 1961, when Soviet Major Yuri A Gagarin first orbited the Earth in his Vostok 1 space craft. Gagarin not only rode a modified Intercontinental Ballistic Missile on his first and only space flight but he rode into the history books as well. The Soviet Union had long been in serious competition with the United States over military and technological dominance of the world. In this one momentous achievement the Soviets did both. Gagarin landed safely by parachute after ejecting from his capsule and walked into the status of national hero, a role reserved for courageous men who lead the way.
