Since August 29, 1949, when the first atomic weapon was detonated by the Soviet Union, the most powerful countries in the world have been engaged in a race to obtain and design impressive nuclear arsenals in order to "level the playing field", or strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. The United States, in particular, have been focused on developing and combining the two emerging technologies -nuclear weapons, and ballistic missiles.
