In this mysteriously dreamy tale, a young woman named Clarice gives birth to a baby girl on her deathbed. The baby is also christened Clarice by the "bruxa" (or witch) who is attending the nearly simultaneous moments of death and birth. Spirited away to a remote lakeside village where everything else seems motionless, Clarice lives her whole life in the span of 24 hours?unlike those she meets and who are living this day like it's any other. But as the film?s vast black-and-white panoramas suggest, even so compressed a lifetime remains impossible to fully grasp or contain. In director Eduardo Nunes?s assured debut feature, precious strands of memory, identity and desire add up to a palpable fairytale affirming our place in the ineffable stream of life. With gorgeous cinematography that recalls legendary Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr, SOUTHWEST (SUDOESTE) is presented in Portuguese with English subtitles. This film is an official selection of the prestigious, award-winning Global Lens Collection, presented by the Global Film Initiative.
