In Super Fertile Derby Girl, a roller derby girl, Mellfire goes through the egg donor process. Understand her reasoning and get a rare inside glimpse, which shows the extensive process that she must go through to donate her eggs for a couple experiencing fertility issues.
Mellfire is a mild mannered social worker by day and a wild roller derby girl by night. As most young women her age, she has many interests and passions, one of which is roller derby.
After thinking long and hard on it, Mellfire decided to become an egg donor. She had to go through an extensive application process. After that process was complete and she was accepted, she was put on a list of eligible donors. The couples have access to search the list of donors. Each donor profile has the donor's picture, medical history, and general information. The only thing they don't know about the donor is her name and the donors know nothing about the couples.
MellFire has been selected by one of the couples to be their egg donor. She will never find out the identity of the couple and whether or not the couple has been successful in having a child with her eggs.
Then she starts the process. There are a lot of appointments, two per week for about six weeks. The appointments are quick; blood pressure, blood work, and the exam.
On top of the exams she has to give herself hormone injections. She has to give herself one shot every night for about four weeks and then two shots every night for the remaining two weeks.
After the six weeks, it's time for the retrieval where they remove her eggs. They knock her out for about 10 minutes and then extract the eggs. In Mellfire's case it was a very successful procedure. They retrieved 18 high quality eggs.
Mellfire does receive a modest sum for giving up her eggs and going through this process. Though she has stated that the money is not worth it alone and she would not be going through this if she didn't believe in what she was doing and helping someone else out. There are health risks involved and it is hard both physically and mentally. So, a donor must really believe in what they are doing.
The talents of women are like a vast untapped natural resource. Female voices are still largely unheard in traditional seats of power. Learn More »
