TAKING BACK THE BLOCK: STORIES OF COMMUNITY RESISTANCE shares the personal stories of ordinary people as they recall their experiences living in vibrant New York City communities, from the 50s to today.
Residents take us on a journey as they fondly remember the great days of their youth, growing up in safe and prosperous communities. They relive the sadness when crime and abandonment took hold. And finally, they share the joy they feel today of seeing their old neighborhoods return once more, reborn for another generation of urban families.
This film focuses on four neighborhoods: the South Bronx, Harlem, East Brooklyn, and the Hudson River town of Beacon.
This half-hour documentary is brought to life with the extensive use of archival photographs and film footage from personal collections and local historical societies.
