TEACHED is a new short film series examining the causes and consequences of education inequality in America. UNCHARTERED TERRITORY takes a look at charter schools.
The first charter school opened its doors nearly twenty years ago and there are now over 5,000 charter schools across forty-two states and the District of Columbia. Yet many Americans are still unclear about exactly what these schools are and how they operate, and why some seem to be so great while others...not so much.
The short film UNCHARTERED TERRITORY, features some of the most successful pioneers of this still-developing education frontier, describing the premise of charter schools and explaining both the opportunities and obstacles presented by them.
UNCHARTERED TERRITORY takes a particular look at the advent of charter schools offering urban, minority children new education options while providing models of education success and accountability. From Los Angeles to Harlem to inner-city Washington DC, entrepreneurial, dedicated individuals are proving that low-income, minority children are capable of achieving at high academic levels when they are clearly expected to.
