On his 1966 debut album with his band the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, Frank Zappa published a record of his most important influences on the inside cover. This film explores Zappa's musical roots by putting the so-called "Freak Out List" under the microscope by tracing the lineage of the most pivotal names therein, and examining the recordings and performances of the man himself. FRANK ZAPPA: THE FREAK-OUT LIST features rare footage of Zappa and the Mothers; archival film of Freak Out List artists; interviews with the Mothers' Ian Underwood, Don Preston and George Duke, plus 1950s doo-wop legends The Cadillacs; and contributions from Zappa biographers Ben Watson and Greg Russo, Edgar Varese biographer Alan Clayson, and many others.
